Sunflowers are amazing. One little seed shoots up to grow a 3 meter tall stalk with a flower the size of a dinner plate in a single season, producing hundreds of seeds that you can eat or allow the wild birds to forage on in winter. Useful and pretty. Just like these mittens. Pretty and charming with a big sunflower along with their favorite pals, the bees, on the palms, and useful in keeping your hands cozy during the cold season while reminding you that summer is not really all that far away. At least, that's what I tell myself every February.
The Sunflower mitten knitting pattern is recommended for intermediate knitters familiar with reading charts and stranded colorwork, and has some duplicate stitch. The pattern is on a downloadable PDF digital file available immediately upon payment and includes easy to follow instructions and colored design charts.
You can knit these mittens in any two contrasting colors in the yarn of your choice. I have chosen a light blue or light green for the main background color and black / brown for the contrast color. Because they are sunflowers I used an orangey-yellow for the duplicate stitch on the flower petals and the bee stripes and chose a green that contrasted with the background color for the duplicate stitch for the stalk and petals.
The mittens pictured were knit using sock / fingering weight and US size 1 / 2.25mm needles for a women's - medium size. You could easily knit a larger mitten using larger needles or adjust to a smaller mitten using smaller needles.
