Keep every stone they throw at you, we have Castle Mittens to build!

The Castle by Birdtown Poetry

Made of mortar, brick and stone, harbors King on his throne.

Not accessible by commoner boat, surrounded by crocodile moat.

Noblemen feast at noonday luncheon, while traitors starve in the dungeon.

A young Prince plays upon a balcony, while Princess studies maps and falconry.

In the castle looms a tower, to lock up those who disrupt power.

Within a chamber sits a Queen, fair and kind, but rarely seen.

Outside the gate go peasant wagons, steering clear of occasional dragons.

Doesn’t that just say it all?

Have you ever wanted to live in a castle?  I certainly did.  That is of course until I became an adult and realized all of the downsides to owning and living in an actual castle.  Can you just imagine what your heating bills would be like?  But that doesn’t stop me from visiting every castle I can anytime the opportunity arises!  To me castles are not just big buildings, but a testament to a span of history and culture just waiting for the next generation to come and discover its treasures and its secrets. Every castle has a different story, some have ramparts and battle scars, some have secret passages in the walls from bedrooms to kitchens to dungeons, some have courtyards bigger than most city blocks and some have towers with spiral stairs so steep and narrow you need to hold unto the walls to keep from getting dizzy and tumbling down them. Political intrigue, family dynasties, murders, coronations, revolutions, famous paintings, glorious gardens, mazes, statues, gilded coaches, royal jewels, armories… there is no end to the fascinating finds and terrible tales contained in castles.

The Castle on the Castle mitten pattern is a humble one, but it has sturdy walls and a highest room in the tallest tower.  The floor tile pattern on the palms and cuff were inspired by Pena Palace in Portugal

I loved how the pattern turned out so much that I knit up another pair of mittens just using the floor tile pattern. Just like in the real castle, I found an extra treasure pattern in the castle pattern.  So for this pattern I did up 3 separate charts; a castle in the daytime, a castle in the night-time and nothing but castle tile.  Knitting these up, makes me want to go on another trip to Europe to discover more castles!
